Faq’s about wingfoiling

Is wingfoiling hard to learn?

It’s not hard to learn wingsurfing, (not to be confused with windsurfing) which is the prerequisite to wingfoiling. Wingsurfing is the same as wingfoiling but the board stays at water level, (doesn’t levitate).

Once you get the hang of wingsurfing and you are ready you can start levitating. Learning how to wingfoil may seem challenging at first, but with the right guidance and a sense of adventure, you’ll be soaring above the water in no time.

While there may be a learning curve, wingfoiling combines elements from various sailing and board sports, making it easier for those with relevant experience to pick up.

The foil may be the trickiest part to master, but with a few fundamentals lessons and some hours of practice, you’ll soon find yourself experiencing those exhilarating controlled flights.

Is it dangerous?

Winging, the thrilling water sport, may seem intimidating at first glance. The foil beneath your feet might appear sharp, but rest assured, it’s not as scary as it appears. With the wing as your power source, maintaining control is within your grasp.

Should you ever feel the need, simply release the wing and gracefully glide to a stop. For beginners, seeking lessons from a reputable wing school is highly recommended. This will provide you with a proper introduction to winging and the necessary equipment, ensuring your safety and confidence on the water.

Additionally, remember to prioritize safety by using a helmet and impact vest while learning.

I’m not as young as I used to be, can I do it?

We’ve taught a lot of ages and skill levels, including some 80 year olds. In a lot of ways, wing foiling can be a little easier on your body since you are smoothly gliding across the water instead of planing across the water and absorbing the bumps and chop through your body.

Wing foiling requires some balance, but it doesn’t require as much strength as you might think. The wind makes the wing light in your hands, so you aren’t relying on your own brute force to keep the wing up in the air. Best way to find out if you can do it, is to come try it out for yourself.

Do you have any age restrictions for kids?

We understand that each child is unique, with varying levels of confidence and curiosity, some kids are really confident on the water and trying new things, while others are a little more timid.

We have lessons specifically designed for kids aged 6-8 and above, providing the perfect equipment for their water adventures. With their natural love for play and innate curiosity, your little grom will surprise you as they quickly grasp the art of winging.

Join us and witness your child soar on the water, embracing the excitement of learning something new.

Can I teach myself?

Absolutely! However, if you want to learn faster and start having fun sooner, why not consider taking a lesson?

At Maui Kite and Wing, we believe that lessons are invaluable in giving you a solid foundation and getting you off to the right start. We are passionate about providing you with guidance and support, offering you things to work on so that you can practice and progress on your own.

While YouTube has a plethora of videos to teach you, having a knowledgeable instructor by your side in the beginning can greatly accelerate your learning.

So why wait? Choose the smarter way to master kiteboarding and wingfoiling!

What gear do you learn on and how many lessons does it take?

The first steps are all about building confidence and mastering the basics. In your initial lesson, you’ll start off on a big floaty SUP or Windsurf board with a center board and the wing, allowing you to focus solely on handling the wing without the added challenge of balancing on a foil board.

After just 2 or 3 lessons, you’ll be soaring through the water with ease. We recommend starting with a lesson on the SUP board to get comfortable with the wing, followed by independent practice.

Once you’re ready to progress to the foil and foil board, consider taking another lesson to solidify those first flights and continue honing your skills. Remember, everyone learns at their own pace, so embrace the journey and focus on being the best learner you can be. You’ll be foiling in no time!!

How long do I need to use a big SUP/Windsurf board before I can start using a foil board?

While it varies depending on you and your local conditions, typically 3-10 hours of practice with a wing and a big board is a good benchmark. However, don’t get too caught up in the numbers. What truly matters is honing your ability to drive the board with efficiency, stay upwind, steer, tack, and jibe consistently.

Once you’ve mastered these skills, it’s time to introduce the exhilarating world of foil boarding. Get ready to glide above the waves with grace and style!

What size foil do I need?

There are a few factors that go into choosing the right foil like weight, experience and conditions. As a general rule of thumb, as a beginner or bigger rider, you would need a bigger front wing and the more advanced or smaller of a rider, you can use smaller front wings.

Looking to take your wing foiling skills to the next level?

Once you’ve mastered the art of foiling, the possibilities are endless. Fly around your favorite local spot, testing your limits and exploring new horizons. Push yourself with flips and jumps, and become a freestyle maestro. Train for thrilling wing races, where speed and strategy set you apart. Ride the waves and swell, embarking on exhilarating downwinders. With winging, the fun never stops. So, gear up, get out there, and let the adventure begin!
